History[]

Pre-debut[]

On April 11, 2014, EXILE HIRO announced the formation of a new group in EXILE TRIBE on the TV show Sukkiri!! . On April 22, the details of the new group were announced on Shuukan EXILE, including that the unit's name would be "THE RAMPAGE".[1] To select the group members, participants of the EXILE PERFORMER BATTLE AUDITION, VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION 4 and GLOBAL JAPAN CHALLENGE were evaluated. Initially, only 6 participants of the EXILE PERFORMER BATTLE AUDITION were revealed as candidates on April 22 (LIKIYA, Zin, Kamiya Kenta, Iwaya Shogo, Yamamoto Shogo and Fujiwara Itsuki), but on May 6, three finalists of the same audition were added (Yonamine Rui, Urakawa Shohei and Takechi Kaisei).[2] On June 17, the winners of the VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION 4 were announced, with three of them being added as vocal candidates for THE RAMPAGE (Aoyama Riku, Kawamura Kazuma and Yoshino Hokuto).[3] Ultimately, a total of 16 candidates were chosen: vocalists RIKU, Kawamura Kazuma and Yoshino Hokuto (coming from VOCAL BATTLE AUDITION 4), and performers LIKIYA, Zin, Kamiya Kenta, Yonamine Rui, Yamamoto Shogo, Iwaya Shogo, Urakawa Shohei, Fujiwara Itsuki, Takechi Kaisei (coming from EXILE PERFORMER BATTLE AUDITION, with Iwaya, Urakawa and Fujiwara being former support members for GENERATIONS from 2011 to 2013) and Hasegawa Makoto, Ryu, Suzuki Takahide and Goto Takuma (coming from GLOBAL JAPAN CHALLENGE).[4]

As part of their training, the group embarked on a Musha Shugyo, starting in July 2014 and honing their skills through 34 free live performances in 17 cities across Japan while living together in a dormitory.[5][6] Since it was unclear how many and which candidates would be chosen to become part of the group's final line-up, the members later described the time as a desperate, harsh and stressful "survival situation". According to Kawamura Kazuma, the three vocalists were especially tense and taking the situation very seriously, thinking that one of them was going to be cut, due to the fact that LDH only had a two-vocalist system for all of their boy groups at that point.[6]

On September 12, 2014, THE RAMPAGE held the live event Musha Shugyo Final at Shinkiba STUDIO COAST in Tokyo. At the end of the event, a surprise announcement was made by EXILE HIRO via a video letter that all 16 of the recruited candidates for the group had been chosen to become part of the final line-up.[7][8][9] On November 16, members Zin and LIKIYA were assigned to be the leaders of the group.[10]

Then, the group went on a second Musha Shugyo, touring the country for 2 years and performing for free in various places in Japan. Through these performances, they bonded as a group, improved as performers and gained fans. As part of their Musha Shugyo, the group also participated as support members in EXILE TRIBE's EXILE TRIBE PERFECT YEAR LIVE TOUR TOWER OF WISH 2014 ~THE REVOLUTION~ dome tour and several other live tours from LDH artists in 2015 and 2016, such as EXILE THE SECOND's tour EXILE THE SECOND LIVE TOUR 2016-2017 "WILD WILD WARRIORS".

In the final year of their second Musha Shugyo (2016), the group split up into 3 separate teams to promote and improve themselves more individually. Since the teams performed at different locations within a certain schedule, they were named "Route A" (Yoshino Hokuto, LIKIYA, Kamiya Kenta, Fujiwara Itsuki, Ryu, Suzuki Takahide), "Route B" (RIKU, Zin, Iwaya Shogo, Urakawa Shohei, Goto Takuma) and "Route C" (Kawamura Kazuma, Yonamine Rui, Yamamoto Shogo, Takechi Kaisei, Hasegawa Makoto). Each team consisted of one vocalist and several performers.[11]

However, while they were training for their debut in the public eye, the members later revealed that the group had been struggling behind the scenes and actually went on a hiatus the year after they were formed until their debut. Several members mentioned that they considered quitting during that time as it was mentally and physically difficult.[12][13] Fujiwara Itsuki revealed that the members had also been working as staffs of the company behind the scenes in that time period, for example as tour staff for senior groups, or in Fujiwara's case, as staff of EXPG schools.[14] Kawamura Kazuma detailed that he worked as a staff member of LDH at senior artists' gigs, washing costumes, cleaning dressing rooms, and distributing lunches to the students of EXPG who were support members.[15] According to Kawamura, the hiatus came to be due to the members' inexperience: "There was a period of time when we were mentally trapped, as we had to suspend our activities partly because we were immature." According to the members, that experience was a turning point and something necessary for them as they were able to overcome these hurdles, reunite and make their debut.[12]

On September 27, 2016, LDH announced that THE RAMPAGE would be making their major debut on January 25, 2017. On October 28, it was revealed that the group's debut single would be titled "Lightning". On the same day it was also revealed that THE RAMPAGE had been signed to the record label rhythm zone.[16]

2017[]

THE RAMPAGE debuted on January 25 with their first single "Lightning",[17][18] peaking at #2 on the Oricon Weekly Charts and being certified 'Gold' by the RIAJ for selling over 100,000 physical copies. The title track would also serve as the theme song of THE RAMPAGE LIVE TOUR 2020 "RMPG" and include the full live footage of the group's first appearance at a-nation.[31]

On December 8, it was revealed that the group and FANTASTICS would be in charge of the special movie theme songs for the 40th anniversary project of Mobile Suit Gundam titled Gundam × KEN OKUYAMA DESIGN × LDH JAPAN "G40 Project".[32] THE RAMPAGE's theme song "SHOW YOU THE WAY" and FANTASTICS' theme song "TO THE SKY" would both reflect the story of Mobile Suit Gundam from two different aspects.[33] The full special movie project was released on Gundam's official YouTube channel on January 1, 2020.

Trivia[]

  • They're the current group with the largest number of fixed members among all groups belonging to LDH.[120]
THE RAMPAGE - RAVERS logo

RAVERS logo

  • The official fandom name of the group is "RAVERS" (レイバーズ), a combination of the words "RAMPAGE" + "LOVERS" with the thought of "everyone who loves THE RAMPAGE" and "everyone who THE RAMPAGE loves". The name of the fandom was decided on January 24, 2023 during a live broadcast to celebrate the group's 6th anniversary.[121][122]
    • In the same announcement, it was revealed that June 16 had been chosen as "RAVERS DAY". This specific date was selected because it is the only month out of the year that does not have a member's birthday, and because the number "16" is important to the group.[122]
    • The RAVERS logo is a combination of THE RAMPAGE's group logo with a heart motif symbolizing LOVERS and the fist of the left hand, and represents the idea of joining fists and walking forward together.[123]
  • The unofficial fandom name of the group was "CREW". It had been used from 2019 to 2023.
P(R)ojectR® logo

p(R)ojectR® logo

  • The group has its own apparel brand titled *p(R)ojectR® (プロジェクト アール) which launched on April 27, 2023.[124][125]
  • The group has a band project called "THE BANDAGE". The members of this project are RIKU, Urakawa Shohei, Kamiya Kenta, Yonamine Rui and Fujiwara Itsuki.[126]
  • During the first five years, all members of the group lived together in a dormitory.[127][90]
    • There were four rooms, and four members lived in each room, sharing bunk beds. Each room also had a room manager.[90]
